What to Wear to a Casino in Spain: Dress Codes Explained

By Clara M.

Smart casual is the safest default because venue rules differ: Casino Barcelona explicitly allows trainers and sportswear, while Mallorca recommends avoiding sportswear and Gran Madrid prohibits several sporty or beach items.

Packing answer

Dress one step smarter than the beach or gym.

You do not need black tie. You do need an outfit that survives the stricter venue policies, not only Barcelona’s more relaxed one.

Spain does not have one useful casino dress code. What works at Casino Barcelona can be too casual for another venue. The best travel advice is therefore not “casual is fine”; it is to choose an outfit that works across the stricter published policies.

The lowest-risk outfit

For a normal evening, use smart casual: long trousers or a neat skirt/dress, a clean shirt or presentable top, and closed shoes or understated trainers. That is comfortable enough for travel and conservative enough to avoid most of the recurring restrictions.

Why trainers are not the real problem

Casino Barcelona explicitly allows sports shoes. The risk is the whole outfit: trainers with clean smart-casual clothing are very different from a tracksuit, sports shorts or beachwear.

Casino Mallorca recommends formal or semi-formal clothing and asks visitors to avoid sportswear, so a “trainers are always fine” rule would still be misleading.

Shorts: summer weather does not remove venue rules

Gran Madrid prohibits sports shorts. Mallorca asks guests to avoid overly informal clothing. If you are packing for a hot-weather city break and want one outfit that works widely, long lightweight trousers are the easiest solution.

Flip-flops and beachwear: the clearest no

These are repeatedly prohibited across the policies checked. That matters particularly in Barcelona and Mallorca, where visitors may be coming directly from the beach. Change before the casino rather than trying to interpret how “smart” a particular sandal looks.

Do men need a jacket or tie?

None of the venue rules used for this guide makes a jacket and tie the standard entry requirement. Smart presentation matters more than formal eveningwear.

What to pack if casino nights are only part of the trip

  • One pair of long trousers that works for restaurants and the casino.
  • A clean shirt, polo or presentable top.
  • Closed shoes or clean understated trainers.
  • A second option if your day clothing is likely to be beachwear or sportswear.

Once the clothing is solved, check your original ID. A perfect outfit will not compensate for the wrong document.
